Underground Rescue Training Center – Occupational Safety Training in Pyhäsalmi
The Callion Underground Rescue Training Center in Pyhäjärvi offers companies and organizations a unique environment for occupational safety training and rescue exercises. Deep inside the Pyhäsalmi mine—at a depth of 400 meters—an extensive training and exercise area has been built in a mine with over 60 years of operational history. It provides conditions that cannot be found anywhere else in Finland—and hardly anywhere else in the world.
The focus of the training is on occupational safety in demanding, high‑risk work environments commonly found in industry, construction, transport, and logistics. For hands-on training, the area features challenging exercise stations where various accident and rescue scenarios can be practiced safely in authentic underground mine conditions.
Training Content and Objectives
- Occupational safety underground, in fall‑hazard environments, and when working with chemicals
- Practical exercises: self‑rescue, rescue from heights and shafts, use of artificial smoke
- Theory sessions in Callion’s classrooms covering the fundamentals of occupational safety and risk management
- Tailored exercises to meet company‑specific needs (e.g., high‑risk work in large industrial facilities)
Versatile Training Opportunities
The exercise stations are designed to simulate “near‑real” accident scenarios, allowing participants to practice correct procedures safely. The facilities are also well suited for rescue service training and for testing new technologies such as drones and robotics.
Examples of Completed Projects
- Posiva / TVO: Customized training programs in underground facilities
- VTT – GoldenEye project: Testing positioning technologies to improve mine safety
- Centria University of Applied Sciences – RoboSol: Testing drone collision avoidance and remote mapping with a robotic dog
