Edible insects

The aim of Callio Edible Insects from Mine (CEI-project) was to combine Europe’s deepest known place, the Pyhäsalmi mine infrastructuret, as well as sustainable and efficient edible insect production in underground conditions, based on circular economy principles. The main objective of the project was to develop and test a closed production system for edible insects food, i.e. a sustainable and efficient next generation pilot environment for insect production in the mine, utilizing the principles of the circular economy. As part of the studies, the project allowed access to international networking and research funding for Mars research opportunities.

The project resulted in a next generation prototype of an insect production system that simulated an underground human community established in pressurized Mars tunnels and, above all, offered testing of industrial-scale insects food production close to the municipalities in order to meet future population growth needs. The concept developed can be duplicated in other underground facilities in Finland and abroad.

Cooperation with edible insects industry enhanced during the project to create a basis for business opportunities after the termination of the project.
