Plant production
The project will combine the Pyhäsalmi mine facilities and the new technological production methods into underground production of plants. The research and pilot facilities established in this project will offer the platform to produce, optimize the production and the commercialization of different kinds of plants and parts of them. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in trays in nutrient solutions in a water solvent. This allows plants to be supplied just the right kinds of nutrients at every growth stage. Illumination is carried out artificially by modelling the circadian rhythm customised for each plant with state-of-the-art LED technology. Potato and fibre nettle will be the first to be tested in the first growth period starting in July 2017. The plants will grow in their specific sections in a customised growing environment.
Cooperation with businesses will be enhanced during the project to create a basis for business opportunities after the termination of the project.
